Happy New Year

Happy New Year! It has been so nice to reconnect with all the staff, students and families this week! We have heard many wonderful stories about our students’ holiday experiences.

Reminders:


  1. Attendance - A very important part in our students’ school day is arriving to class on time. Period one begins at 8:45. Teachers are supervising at 8:30 outside until the 8:45 start time. Arriving to school between 8:30 and 8:45 allows the students to mingle / visit with their friends before the start of classes. Arriving on time for class (at 8:45) allows the students to enter with their peers, hear morning announcements and begin lessons (hearing the introductory instructions and outline for the day) with their teachers. As well, in the broader scope, school is a microcosm of our bigger world...it is a chance to practice real life skills. Parents promoting the importance of arriving on time for class in elementary school are helping their children prepare for independently arriving on time for middle school, high school, appointments and jobs in the future. We respectfully ask for you to make this a priority in your homes this New Year and have all students to school on time.


  1. Cashless - As you know, all Halton schools use a cashless system. At Harrison PS, it is our preferred method of having parents pay for fundraising events, food days and trips. We would be very happy to not manage any cash or cheques coming into the school and only use the cashless system. If you have not used it in the past, we ask that you take a moment to get set up on the system. If you need any help or guidance when using the cashless system, please let us know.


  1. Winter weather - We have had some strange winter weather so far this year...including the Spring like thaw we had this week. Please be sure to visit the HDSB website (or follow them on twitter) and they will have the most up to date information about bus cancellations and school closures. We do only have two large buses and one small bus. So, when the buses are cancelled, and schools are open, the regular classroom program continues here at Harrison. Also, please be sure to send students with all the proper winter outdoor clothing. They do go  outside twice a day (and some students more than that). It is often helpful to send a second pair of gloves with your child as gloves get wet during first break and are not much comfort from the cold during second break.
